Orthognathic Surgery

WHAT IS ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY?

Orthognathic means straight jaws

Orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) is needed when the teeth don't fit correctly or the jaws don't meet correctly.

Jaw growth is gradual process, and in some cases, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a number of problems that affect chewing function, speech, oral health, and appearance. Jaw alignment can also be affected by injury to the jaw and birth defects.

In preparing you for orthognathic surgery, Dr. Roberson will work closely with your orthodontist. Your orthodontist will be responsible for moving the teeth so they will fit correctly after your jaws have been repositioned, and Dr. Roberson will be responsible for repositioning your jaw(s) so the teeth and jaws are in proper alignment.

Before any treatment begins, a consultation will be performed to thoroughly explain and answer any questions associated with orthognathic surgery. It is imperative to understand that treatment of your improper bite may take up to two years to complete between orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. You must be prepared to make a long-term commitment as it pertains with your treatment time.

Take a closer look at your bite and appearance. Below are a list of some conditions that may require orthognathic surgery.
